在现代而 self-conscious 的手法之下，我感觉到还是那个反复出现的男性焦虑 -- 因为爱上一个狐狸精而失去了自己的竞争力。当然也不能责怪作者没有新意，男女之间的关系原本就很简单，远远没有同性之间和亲属之间的关系那么复杂。
前阵子即看见有人说：你们美国人是 obsessed with race，我们英国人是 obsessed with class。作者是个哈代迷，据说此书中的女主角是 inspired by Tess of D'Urberville 。
Jeremy Irons 年轻的时候瘦精精的，胸前和手臂一点毛都没有。他总是被分派这种 obsessed 角色。Meryl Streep 年轻时颇美，长脸尖鼻子，我喜欢。 据说书作者希望 Helen Mirren 演女主的，那时候她已经建立艳女之名，小男生杀手，跟角色设定挺吻合的。
剧本是 Harold Pinter。整个影片里有明显的距离感，学术讨论感，显然故意避免极度煽情的效果。反哈代乎？
