Mood Indigo

Across the Track Blues (Note the contrast and interactions among instruments in texture and color. It's an approach typical of blues, but rarely with such conceptual clarity.)

Sophisticated Lady (piano & bass version and piano solo). Both versions nearly gave me an orgasm :P Here's the orchestral version, which has less direct effect but perhaps more suitable for the concert setting :D.


大概六七年前吧,我跟一个中年同事聊天,他是第二代日裔美国人,有俩儿子。他的业余爱好第一是Civil War (南北战争)历史,经常跑到南方去开个 amateur historian 学术会,或者到National Archives查资料;第二是Rodgers & Hammerstein 的百老汇音乐剧,包括 South Pacific, Sound of Music, Oklahoma! 他说过一句我一直记得:现在的流行歌曲,从曲子到歌词,跟 Rodgers & Hammerstein 一比,真是小儿科,啥都算不上。

艺术趣味这种东西,一般来说,是没法一论高低的,又不是打架斗殴,又不是百米短跑,个人趣味耳。不过有时候单调的东西也不能硬说成精妙的,俗套的也不能硬说成是独特的,这点差别还是有的。难听的也不能说成是好听的。Jazz 绝非小众艺术,喜欢和推崇的人大把大把,著作评论学术研究一大把,不过跟流行音乐的流行程度还是差得很远。

Jazz 纪录片第四集中有人偶然地提到一件事,说 Jazz 圈子分成两部分,一半是音乐家自己,一半是评论和理论化音乐的文人,后者替世界定义和评判前者,而前者常常觉得后者不知所谓。文字与音乐的姻缘当然不限于 Jazz,只是越到现代,就越有更多的文人忍不住用文字参与艺术 --- 音乐和美术和其他现代艺术都是。这是不是因为现代人里识字的多了?被艺术影响到感情的人多,但是训练有素且有天赋有能力表达的人少,我们这些无法真正参与的人只好用间接的易掌握的媒介,即文字,聊以自慰耳。
