Gladwell 的书里的前言很好玩，他说他在上大学的时候，原本下决心要当律师，毕业前改了主意想做广告业 (Mad Man!)，毕业后申请了多伦多附近18家广告公司都被拒绝。闲着也是闲着，在美国玉米地儿的一家小报找到工作，然后转到华盛顿邮报，然后1996年从那里跳入纽约客。
